THE LEATHER WORKER
MARTIN BRADY
LEATHER WORKER
Artisan, 68 The Square, Chagford, TQ13 8AE
Martin has a hands-on approach to his craft, often visiting tanneries to select the perfect hides. He is pictured sampling skins at J&FJ Baker & Co, the UK’s last remaining oak-bark tannery, in Colyton, East Devon.
Martin hand-stitches his products, which include belts, handbags and dog collars, at his shop in Chagford, in view of his customers.
“Working in front of the public promotes curiosity and interest in the skills and products. Using hand tools gives products real character that you don’t often get on sewing machines. You can’t rush good leather work.”
On Martin's workshop, you will learn basic leather skills and have the chance to produce your own bookmark or key fob. If you're fast, you might also get to make a leather bookcover.
